This song holds a special place in my heart. I wrote it about four years ago while staying with my good friend, mentor, and incredible musician Wendy Dewberry, at her home in Aberdeen in the Karoo.
We were there for one of our music weekends (which we absolutely need to revive soon!), chatting in the kitchen about songwriting. I confessed that I usually write the “soppy stuff”, songs about love and feelings, and that I was craving something different. That’s when my husband said.: “Why don’t you write about Aberdeen?” I laughed and said, “What could I possibly write? Nothing ever happens here!”
And then, right in that moment, it started raining after a seven-year drought. It felt like the universe handed me the song on a silver platter. That’s how “Aberdeen” came to life.
You’ll hear the bass straight away. I wrote the whole song on bass guitar, humming a melody as I went. Poor Wendy must’ve been ready to throw me out, I didn’t stop playing it all weekend! I’m incredibly proud of this song. Glynn Storm has been an absolutely amazing, helping shape the production and final sound. Wendy’s harmonies in the chorus are pure magic, and Paul Greeff added the most beautiful dobro & steel guitar, his touch completely blew me away.
